Four colours, not forty

The Voyager range is sixteen pieces, from a twenty-pound waist bag to a three-piece set. Every one of them comes in the same four colours: Mustard, Navy, Olive and Charcoal.

That is a decision, and it is one of the few things about this range we can honestly claim as ours. We specify which designs go into the range and we set the colours they ship in.

What we left out

The catalogue these pieces come from runs a great deal wider than four. There is a red, an orange, a fuchsia, a teal, a pastel blue. All of them sell somewhere. None of them sit next to each other.

Four is the number where a range stops being a list of options and starts being a system. Buy a washbag now and a suitcase next spring and they still look like one decision rather than two separate purchases that happen to share a logo. That only works if the palette holds still — which means resisting the seasonal colour, every season.

The two that sell hardest

Mustard and Olive, which surprises people who expect a navy or a black to lead. The mustard is the one customers pick up first on a shop floor. The olive is quieter and tends to be the second case someone buys.

The olive is worth a note of its own. It is not the deep forest green we use on our hardshell ranges — it is greyer, softer, closer to a field jacket than a racing car. We called it Forest for a while, which was wrong, and it is Olive now.

The honest limit

Four colours means we will not have the one you were picturing. That is the cost, and we would rather pay it than ship forty shades that do not agree with each other.
